Common questions about traveling to Tibet

Do I need a visa for Tibet?
Yes. All international travelers need both a Chinese visa (obtained at your local Chinese embassy) and a Tibet Travel Permit (arranged by XZZY Trip). We handle the permit process for all our customers.
How do I get a Tibet Travel Permit?
XZZY Trip handles the entire Tibet Travel Permit process for you. Once you book a tour, simply send us your passport photo page and Chinese visa page scans, and we take care of the rest. The permit is issued 5-7 working days before your arrival.
What is the best time to visit Tibet?
The best time to visit Tibet is from April to October. May to September offers the warmest weather and clearest skies for mountain views. March-April features the spectacular peach blossom season. November to February is the quiet winter season with fewer tourists and lower prices.
How do I prevent altitude sickness?
Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and heavy exercise on your first days. Our itineraries are designed for gradual acclimatization starting from lower altitude areas. We provide oxygen in vehicles and hotels. Most travelers adjust within 2-3 days.
Can I travel independently in Tibet?
International travelers must join an organized tour with a licensed travel agency. Independent travel is not permitted. XZZY Trip offers both group and private tour options to suit your preferences.
What should I pack for Tibet?
Pack layers including thermal underwear, fleece, and a waterproof jacket. Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm are essential due to strong UV. Comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and personal medications including altitude sickness remedies are recommended.
Can I use credit cards in Tibet?
Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and some shops in Lhasa, but cash Chinese Yuan is recommended for smaller purchases, local restaurants, and tips. ATMs are available in Lhasa and Shigatse.
What is your cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 30 days before departure. 50% refund between 15-30 days. No refund within 15 days of departure, but we can reschedule your tour to a later date at no extra cost.
Do your guides speak English?
Yes, all our guides are professional, licensed English-speaking Tibetan guides with years of experience. We also offer guides in French, German, Spanish, and Japanese upon request for private tours.
