Depart from Guangzhou on a direct flight to Lhasa. Explore the Potala Palace, Everest Base Camp, and the sacred Namtso Lake.

Full Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Depart Guangzhou - Fly to Lhasa 3,650m

No meals

Take a direct flight from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport to Lhasa Gonggar Airport, a journey of approximately 4 hours. As the plane descends over the Himalayas you will be treated to breathtaking aerial views of snow-capped peaks stretching to the horizon. Upon arrival your guide will meet you with a traditional white silk scarf greeting and transfer you to your hotel in Lhasa city center. The rest of the day is for rest and gradual acclimatization to the altitude of 3,650 meters. Stay well hydrated with warm Tibetan butter tea and avoid strenuous activity on your first day at high altitude.

Day 2

Lhasa - Potala Palace & Jokhang Temple

Full morning exploring the magnificent Potala Palace, the iconic 13-story winter residence of the Dalai Lamas perched on Marpo Ri Red Hill. This UNESCO World Heritage Site built over 1,300 years contains over 1,000 rooms filled with precious statues, thangkas, and jewel-encrusted stupas containing the remains of past Dalai Lamas. In the afternoon visit the sacred Jokhang Temple, the holiest shrine in Tibet constructed in 647 AD by King Songtsen Gampo. The temple houses the revered Jowo Shakyamuni statue, the most sacred Buddha image in Tibet. Walk the Barkhor kora circuit following pilgrims circumambulating the temple.

Day 3

Lhasa - Drepung & Sera Monasteries

Visit Drepung Monastery, once the world's largest monastery housing up to 10,000 monks at its peak in the 17th century. The whitewashed buildings cascade down the hillside like a giant white conch shell, and the monastery contains six colleges and the magnificent Ganden Phodrang Palace. In the afternoon visit Sera Monastery to witness the famous monks debating session from 3-5 PM. Young monks gather in the pebble courtyard wearing their traditional maroon robes and engage in animated philosophical debates with dramatic hand-clapping gestures and rhythmic questions.

Day 4

Lhasa to Shigatse via Yamdrok Lake 390km

Scenic drive south from Lhasa across the Karo La Pass at 5,010 meters with spectacular panoramic views of the snow-capped Nyenchen Tanglha mountain range stretching as far as the eye can see. Stop at the stunning turquoise Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet's three holiest lakes, which stretches 72 kilometers across the valley with its distinctive branching shape resembling a coral branch. Continue past the enormous Karola Glacier cascading down the mountainside to Gyantse to visit the magnificent Kumbum Stupa, a 35-meter high chorten with nine floors. Arrive in Shigatse at 3,900 meters.

Day 5

Shigatse to Everest Base Camp 350km

Morning visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, the seat of the Panchen Lama, founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama. The monastery features the world's largest gilded statue of Maitreya Buddha standing 26 meters tall, cast from 115 tons of brass and gold. Drive south through dramatic mountain scenery to the Gawu La Pass at 5,200 meters for your first breathtaking view of Mount Everest north face rising 8,848 meters into the sky. Continue to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world, and on to Everest Base Camp for sunset. Overnight at EBC guesthouse.

Day 6

EBC Sunrise to Shigatse

Early morning wake-up call at 5 AM to witness the spectacular sunrise over Mount Everest. As the first golden rays of sunlight hit the highest peak on Earth, the mountain glows in shades of gold, orange, and pink, creating an unforgettable spectacle that stays with you forever. After a hot breakfast at the guesthouse, begin the 350-kilometer drive back to Shigatse with stops for photography along the way. Arrive in Shigatse late afternoon for check-in and a well-deserved hot shower.

Day 7

Shigatse to Namtso Lake Northern Route

Today we take the spectacular northern route through the vast Tibetan steppe, crossing the Lakpa La Pass at 5,050 meters. The landscape opens up into endless grasslands dotted with nomadic herders black yak-hair tents called purkha and grazing yaks. Watch for wildlife including Tibetan gazelles goa and wild kiang Tibetan wild ass along the way. Arrive at sacred Namtso Lake at 4,718 meters in the late afternoon, timing it perfectly for the sunset that paints the turquoise waters in brilliant shades of orange and purple against the snow-capped Nyenchen Tanglha mountains.

Day 8

Namtso Lake Full Day Exploration

Full day to explore the sacred Namtso Lake, Heaven Lake the highest saltwater lake in the world at 4,718 meters and one of Tibet's three holy lakes. Walk along the pristine turquoise shoreline and visit Tashi Dor Island, the largest island on the lake with its small meditation cave and monastery where hermits once meditated in isolation. Prayer flags flutter in the wind along the shore as pilgrims circumambulate the lake, a journey that takes 2-3 days on foot. The spiritual atmosphere of this sacred lake creates an unforgettable experience.

Day 9

Namtso to Lhasa via Damxung

B

Morning at Namtso Lake for final photographs and a last walk along the shore breathing in the pure mountain air. Drive back to Lhasa crossing the Nyenchen Tanglha Pass at 4,600 meters and descending through the lush Damxung grassland, a vast pasture where Tibetan shepherds tend their sheep and yaks against a backdrop of snow mountains. Arrive in Lhasa late afternoon. The evening is free for a final exploration of Barkhor Street for souvenirs or a farewell dinner at a traditional Tibetan restaurant.

Day 10

Free Day in Lhasa

Free day to explore Lhasa at your own pace. Options include visiting the Tibet Museum for an excellent overview of Tibetan history and Buddhist art, relaxing at a traditional sweet tea house on Barkhor Street where elderly Tibetans gather for afternoon tea and conversation, or taking a Tibetan cooking class to learn how to make momos Tibetan dumplings and thukpa hearty noodle soup.

Day 11

Lhasa Free Day - Last Exploration

Another free day in Lhasa for independent exploration. Visit Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama's summer palace and a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring beautiful gardens and intricately decorated pavilions built in the 1750s. Alternatively, take a short hike up to the Potala Palace rear hill for a different perspective of the palace, or explore the small but fascinating Ani Tsankhung Nunnery, one of the oldest nunneries in Lhasa, hidden in the old quarter.

Day 12

Depart Lhasa

After breakfast at your hotel, your guide and driver will transfer you to Lhasa Gonggar Airport for your departure flight.
