This private tour takes you through the stunning landscapes of eastern Tibet in Nyingchi, the ancient cradle of Tibetan civilization in Shannan, and the awe-inspiring Mount Everest Base Camp. With your own private guide and comfortable vehicle, you can explore at your own pace. The journey begins in low-altitude Nyingchi for easy acclimatization, then gradually ascends to the roof of the world at Everest Base Camp. Along the way you will visit Tibet first monastery Samye Monastery, the sacred Yamdrok Lake, and the magnificent Potala Palace.
Arrive in Lhasa by air. Your guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. As winter is a dry and clear season in Lhasa, the visibility is excellent and the skies are brilliantly blue. Rest and acclimatize to the altitude. In the late afternoon, take a gentle walk near your hotel to see the city's winter atmosphere.
Early morning bird watching at Lhalu Wetland National Nature Reserve, the world's highest wetland at 3,645 meters. In winter, this wetland becomes a haven for migratory birds including the endangered black-necked crane Grus nigricollis, bar-headed geese, ruddy shelducks, and brown-headed gulls. Bring your binoculars and camera with a telephoto lens for excellent bird photography opportunities. In the afternoon visit the magnificent Potala Palace.
Visit Jokhang Temple in the morning to see pilgrims at the holiest shrine in Tibet. Walk the Barkhor kora circuit. In the afternoon, head to the Lhasa River for winter bird watching. The riverbanks attract various waterfowl including mergansers, teals, and the beautiful white-tailed eagles. The winter light creates excellent conditions for bird photography with snow-capped peaks in the background.
Full day excursion to Yamdrok Lake, which freezes partially in winter creating unique habitats for birds. The journey crosses the Karo La Pass at 5,010 meters with spectacular winter mountain scenery. At the lake, look for black-necked cranes feeding in the surrounding fields, Tibetan snowcocks on the rocky slopes, and various water birds on the lake. The winter colors of the frozen lake against the golden grasslands are spectacular.
After breakfast, transfer to Lhasa Gonggar Airport for your departure flight. You have experienced the unique winter bird life of the Tibetan Plateau in the clear, crisp air of the high altitude winter season. Tashi Delek!
