Visit Drepung Monastery, once the world's largest monastery with up to 10,000 monks. In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery to witness the famous monks' debating session (3-5 PM). Cross the Karo La Pass (5,010m) with views of the Nyenchen Tanglha range. Stop at the turquoise Yamdrok Lake (4,441m), one of Tibet's three holy lakes. Continue past the Karola Glacier to Gyantse. Visit the Kumbum Stupa and Pelkor Chode Monastery. Continue to Shigatse (3,900m).
Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery with its 26-meter gilded Maitreya Buddha statue. Drive south via Lhatse to the Gawu La Pass (5,200m) for first breathtaking views of the Himalayan range including Everest (8,848m). Visit Rongbuk Monastery (4,980m), the highest monastery in the world. Arrive at Everest Base Camp (5,200m) for sunset over Everest's north face. Overnight at EBC guesthouse.
Early morning to witness spectacular sunrise over Everest's north face — the peak catches golden light first. After breakfast, drive back to Shigatse through the scenic Himalayan foothills. Arrive in the afternoon for a well-deserved rest.
Drive back to Lhasa along the scenic Yarlung Tsangpo River valley. The journey takes approximately 5-6 hours with photo stops along the way. Arrive in Lhasa in the afternoon. Free evening for shopping or relaxing.
